After two and a half days of whirlwind touring, we were both done with the crowds of New York City. Bill was concerned that we still had lots of work to do before leaving the next day, but wanted to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I told him to go ahead and I'd get things done. Kind of wanted some alone time, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I worked all morning doing several loads of laundry, cleaning and cooking up our dinner in advance. Then I took the ferry over to Jersey City to get provisions, but FIRST, to get a pedicure. Hey, the princes needs her monthly pampering to keep her crown, ok? Anyway, our two stories follow below.
HE SAID:
I rode my bike over to the terminal to catch the quick ferry ride over to Ellis Island. The ferry ticket to Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and back to Liberty Park (where we were docked) was only $12...best deal so far!
Ellis Island was really interesting with all the history of immigrants that had passed through. I looked up my maternal great grandfather, Alois Geiger, who had immigrated from Germany. I found 14 of them! I think the one who came through the gates in 1914 was him. Tried to look up the Coogan's for boop, but didn't know a first name, so no luck there.

The entrance to Ellis Island.

The registration room in Ellis, the first room all immigrants passed through. Made me think of all the souls that passed through this room...sets you back.
After Ellis, I took the ferry to Liberty Island. Found it very interesting, as well. Was amazed to learn the American people did not really embrace the gift from France until WWI, when she became a symbol for freedom. At that time, it became customary that all the troops leaving or returning to NY harbor would tip their hat to Lady Liberty. Upon our departure of NY harbor, I did the same.

Facts you may not know:
The tablet she holds reads: July 4, 1776.
The broken shackles around her ankles represent breaking the bonds of tyranny.
The seven points on her crown represent the seven seas and seven continents.

All in all, it was a great day. When I got back to the boat, I set to work washing down the deck and refilling the water tanks. Then boop showed up...but I'll let her tell you that story.
SHE SAID:
As I was busily working around the boat, it got pretty hot and I got pretty annoyed with my hair falling in my face. Finally, I got so aggravated that I took the kitchen scissors and CHOP...end of problem. Now, I did not cut my bangs in the wispy fashion that my Dayton hairdresser and best friend, Linda had taught me. Noooooooo. I cut them straight across...Chatty Cathy style. Almost immediately I thought, hmmm, maybe that wasn't such a great idea.
Anyway, I finished up all my work, got my backpack and shopping list and headed for the ferry over to Jersey City (just across the channel). I thought, hey, you know what I need? I need a pedicure to relax. Found a little place that did a fabulous job. I then asked them where I might find a hair salon to fix my, um, spur-of-the-moment haircut. They directed me down the block and around the corner. Wouldn't you know that my sister Sue called me. We talked for a couple minutes then she said she had to check out of the grocery and would call me back. And wouldn't you know that at that EXACT point in time I was standing next to a little outdoor cafe. Hey, it's 2 pm and I haven't had lunch yet. I'll have a little glass of wine and a salad while I wait for Sue. So that's what I did. Sue and I chatted about a book I'd just finished re-reading called "Eat, Pray, Love" (a most excellent book that I highly recommend).
When I got off the phone a young lady at another table turned and said she was reading it as well. We started chatting it up and I believe a second glass of wine was involved. Her name was Ashley and she was at lunch with her mom, Cynthia and her mom's coworker Sylvia. From henceforth known in the boop lexicon as The Jersey Girls! I asked their opinion about what to do about my hair "issue." Should I just get the bangs fixed or should I cut off more of my hair? Turns out Sylvia teaches cosmetology and she emphatically stated the Jersy girl anthem, "Oh honey, you need some volume!" She even offered to go to the hairdresser with me to tell them what to do. Ok, I'm game. After all, this hair has been driving me nuts, always blowing in my face. I'd taken to pretty much just wearing it in a ponytail anyway.
We walked down to the hair salon and wouldn't you know, she KNEW the hair dresser! (I just love coincidences/signs like these.) They discussed my locks as I sat there in a daze. Soon he was chop, chop, chopping my hair down to about 3 - 4 inches all over my head. What a difference! It looked terrific. I loved how much lighter it felt and I gotta say the volume DID help! I walked back up to the cafe to be met by a full round of Jersey Girl applause as well as another round of wine. Then I came up with a brilliant idea. Why don't they come back with me to see our boat? They agreed, even though poor Ashley was on crutches due to recent surgery on her ankle. As she hobbled down the 3 blocks to the ferry, I ran ahead and got the groceries then met them at the dock.
We took the ferry and as we were walking down the main dock toward our boat, we called over to Bill to say hi. He said he thought, "who are those women? If I start talking to them and boop shows up, she'll kill me." He did not even recognize me! We got to the boat and left Ashley on a stool on the dock while I gave the other girls a quick tour. When we came back out, our neighbor (on the power boat) had gotten her a lounge chair and a Margaretta. (Oh, to be young and beautiful again!) Our neighbor said, "man, Bill, you are so lucky. My wife is out on a walk right now. What are the odds she'll bring home 3 women?" Bill responded, "I have the best wife in the world. She goes out to get groceries and brings back entertainment." Needless to say, we all had a lot of laughs.
Whooping it up with our neighbor. When his wife returned from her walk, she did not seem too amused.
I thought Bill was so great to embrace my new friends. Then, when I saw this picture, I kinda understood why. :-)

Ashley was tired out so we loaded her and her crutches in a dock cart to take her back to the ferry for the return trip home.
Once again, one of the best days was one that was totally unplanned. THANKS a million to my new best friends and hair counselors, The Jersey Girls!!!!! Gotta love 'em!
